Psychodynamic Therapy: The Way of Insight

Type of Therapy:

Insight Oriented Talk Therapy

Description:

The goal of depth psychotherapy is to uncover the roots of emotional suffering so that the self can heal from the inside out. According to this approach, stagnation and lack of fulfillment in life result from "invisible roadblocks" caused by subconscious coping strategies adopted in childhood.

Based on childhood experiences, people develop individualized, unconscious “mental models” of how the world works and how people behave. A person carries these models with them into adulthood. Suffering occurs because we continually relive our childhood patterns. The key is to learn to recognize our patterns consciously and to change them.

Example of Treatment:

Psychodynamic psychotherapy shows the way out via: self-reflection, self-examination, free association, dream interpretation, and the use of the relationship between the therapist and the patient as a window into problematic relationship patterns in the patient’s life.

These tools lead to self-understanding and self-compassion as well as greater understanding of relationship patterns. The goal is not only to alleviate obvious symptoms but to help people lead richer, healthier lives.

Facts & Figures:

The American Psychologist, hallmark journal of the American Psychological Association, reports that psychodynamic therapy has a more powerful effect on symptom reduction than antidepressant medication.

Psychodyamic Therapy Successfully Treats:

Most psychiatric issues. It is ideal for entrenched or complex problems that require a long term approach.
